I was born and raised in Pennsylvania and have lived in Alaska since 1973. I spent my first seven years in the state teaching high school language arts in the Yup’ik communities of St. Mary’s, Bethel and Chevak. In 1982 I went to work for public radio and television station KYUK in Bethel as a television production assistant. For the next 14 years I worked as a videographer, editor, director and producer of a wide variety of television programs including news, news magazines, documentaries, information and instructional programs, live performances and studio productions. Most of these programs focused on the history, culture, political and social issues of the Yup’ik people of the Yukon/Kuskokwim Delta. I left KYUK in 1996 and worked as an independent video producer from 1997 to 1999. In 1999 I joined the Lower Kuskokwim School District as a media technician. I returned to KYUK-TV as senior video producer in July, 2000.

I was appointed to the
Alaska State Historical Commission by Governor Frank Murkowski in January 2006 for a two year term. I’m a member of the Alaska Historical Society and served on its board of directors from 1997 to 2003. I’m a member of the Alaska Moving Image Preservation Association (AMIPA) and the Association of Moving Image Archivists (AMIA). I’m a public broadcasting representative on the Alaska Rural Communications Service (ARCS) Programming Council.

My wife Cecilia is from the western Alaska village of Chevak. She was a teacher for 29 years and retired from the University of Alaska as an associate professor in 1999. We have 4 grown children.

  • Your conversion of 60’s C (90’s F) is slightly off;
    60c is about 140F; 90F would be about 32c (which would be the correct temperature for that time period.
